Singular Old English

Plural -

Old English

  1. The ancestor language of Modern English, also called Anglo-Saxon, spoken in Britain from about 400 AD to 1100 AD. The language is a more inflected language, maintaining strong and weak verbs, nouns, and adjectives. It has a clearly marked subjunctive mood, and has 5 cases of nouns and adjectives. In addition to singular and plural grammatical numbers, there was a dual number for two people. After ca. 884, many Old Norse words made their way into Old English, as Norse settlers in the Danelaw interacted with native Anglo-Saxons.
  2. (dated) Middle English.

Old English (Englisc, Anglisc, Ænglisc) or Anglo-Saxon is an early form of the English language that was spoken and written by the Anglo-Saxons and their descendants in parts of what are now England and south-eastern Scotland between at least the mid-5th century and the mid-12th century. What survives through writing represents primarily the literary register of Anglo-Saxon.

It is a West Germanic language and is closely related to Old Frisian. It also experienced heavy influence from Old Norse, a member of the related North Germanic group of languages.

Development

Further information: History of the English language

Old English was not static, and its usage covered a period of approximately 700 years – from the Anglo-Saxon migrations that created England in the 5th century to some time after the Norman Conquest of 1066 when the language underwent a dramatic transition. During this early period it assimilated some aspects of the languages with which it came in contact, such as the Celtic languages and the two dialects of Old Norse from the invading Vikings, who occupied and controlled large tracts of land in northern and eastern England, which came to be known as the Danelaw.

Can an Old English Bulldogge be trained to sniff out drugs?
Q. Just wondering if an Old English Bulldogge can be trained to be a drug sniffing dog.
Asked by intheloopchicago - Mon Aug 13 01:01:01 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Definitely! Really, any breed has the nose to sniff out drugs. A dog also needs to have interest and drive. The Olde English Bulldogge, from what I know of it, has mostly been maintained as a working breed, so I think it could do great as a drug sniffer. Hounds and bird dogs have been developed to have better noses as well as a greater interest in what they smell. Bulldogs, on the other hand, have more difficulty smelling because of their squashed nose. However, bulldogs have been trained to do scent-discrimination exercises and tracking. And OEBs have less of an extreme nose than the English Bulldogs. I think as a breed with a strong working heritage, an Olde English Bulldogge could excel as a drug detection dog.

How to get my 2yr old male Old English bull dog to get along with a new 4month old female Great Dane.?
Q. I have three dogs a male 2yr old Old English Bulldog a male 2yr old Great Dane and a 4month Old female Great Dane. The two great danes get along fine as do the 2yr old male dane and the 2yr old male bulldog. But the 4 month old female great dane and the 2yr old male english bulldog don't get along that well. What can I do to stop them from fighting with each other?

A. Are they really fighting or is the older dog just putting the puppy in its place? If it is true fighting one of them would receive some serious wounds. It's more likely that the older dog is teaching the puppy what behavior it will accepted and what behavior it won't put up with. If this is the case it is best left for the dogs to settle among themselves. There is a pecking order that must strickly left up to them. I have 2 9 yr. old dogs and a German Sheppard Pup about 15 months old and the two older dogs will put up with some of the puppy play but when she gets too rough they will take her down. She hasn't respected the pecking order and she gets in trouble all the time. Althought it does sound like they are killing her they are… [cont.]

Can anyone tell me what the differences are between a bull mastiff and an old english mastiff.?
Q. Both dogs seem to have a long history and have similar roles in the history of the specific breeds. I am wondering what the differences are between the two breeds and what role the bull mastiff performed that the old english could not?

A. the Mastiff,(no English in the name) is larger, weighing anything up to 18 stone, they have longer muzzles, and rarely attack, their job is to keep at bay, (I think maybe the drool would keep most away haha, ask my visitors) a bullmastiff,if I remember correctly was bred by the gamekeepers of large estate to track and hold poachers, they are smaller have shorter muzzles, and are more athletic,if bred and reared correctly both breeds have fantastic temperaments, and are very steady animals if trained.probably not the bets for obedience work as they are too slow at the turns, sits etc,not to say they will not do this but in their own time, Wendy
